Billing & quota

What you pay (during the beta: nothing), how your storage allowance works, and exactly what happens at the edges — going over your allowance, stopping payment, or deleting a vault. Throughout, one rule holds: reading your data back is always open and always free.

During the private beta: comped

The beta is invite-only and comped. Your storage allowance is free during the private beta — there is nothing to pay and no card to add. The comped beta allowance is up to 100 GiB of storage across up to 10 vaults, which is plenty for a real vault while you kick the tires.

Prices for after the beta are not set yet. When billing opens, beta users hear about it first, before anyone else. Your beta grant is personal to your account and, to be honest with you, is scoped to the beta rather than a lifetime promise — see The private beta for why we word it that way.

How the allowance works

Clawgnition sells storage as a quota — an allowance you can use up to, described as "up to N". You are never sold a dedicated or unlimited amount; you get a clear ceiling and pay one predictable number for it, with no metered surprises. Two numbers define an allowance:

  • Storage — how many bytes, in total, your sealed backups can occupy across all your vaults.
  • Vaults — how many separate vaults you can keep.

Only the data you store counts toward the allowance. Reading, restoring, and exporting do not count and are never metered.

The free trial

Outside the comped beta, there is a genuine free trial so you can try Clawgnition before committing:

What Free trial
Storage Up to 1 GiB
Vaults 1
Recovery window Every version from the last 7 days, then a daily version out to 30 days — the same for everyone
Backups per day A modest daily count (up to 4)
To get started A verified email and a quick bot check

The recovery window is deliberately identical for the free trial and every other plan. It is a flat product fact, never a lever to sell you a bigger plan.

What happens if you go over your allowance

If your stored data reaches your allowance, new backups pause — centraid cannot write more until you are back under the limit or your allowance grows. Crucially, reads never pause. You can always restore and export, even while writes are held. So going over quota is a "please make room" nudge, never a lockout of your own data.

Reads stay open in every account state. Whether your account is active, past due, suspended, or a vault is winding down, you can always read and export your data. A billing problem can pause new writes; it can never lock you out of what you have already stored.

What happens if you stop paying

After the beta, if payment lapses, deletion is deliberately slow and loud — surprise deletion of a backup would be unforgivable. It goes in three stages:

  1. Freeze. New backups are paused, but reads stay open. You can still restore and export everything.
  2. Countdown. A long, clearly-communicated countdown begins — measured in weeks, not days — with repeated email reminders. Nothing is deleted during this time.
  3. Purge. Only after the countdown fully lapses is data removed. Accounts that are paid up in good standing, and comped accounts, never enter this funnel at all.

Throughout every stage before purge, you can take everything out for free. See Leaving.

Inactivity on the free trial

A free-trial vault that goes a long time with no new backups (around 90 days) enters the same slow, well-signposted countdown before anything is removed. As always, reads stay open the whole time, so a quiet vault is never deleted out from under you without warning and without a chance to export.

Deleting a vault

When you delete a vault, it is not wiped instantly. It is first soft-deleted, which leaves an undelete window in case you change your mind, then it enters the same countdown before a final purge. While a vault is soft-deleted or waiting to be purged, the dashboard shows a banner reaffirming that reads are still open — so you can always export before anything is gone.

The cost promise, in one line

You pay one predictable number for the allowance you chose. No metered surprises, and no fee — ever — to read your own data back.

Common questions

What do I pay during the beta?

Nothing. The beta allowance is comped and there is no card on file.

Do restores or exports cost money or use up my allowance?

No. Reads, restores, and exports are always free and never count toward your storage allowance. Only stored data counts.

If I stop paying, do you delete my data immediately?

No. Writes pause first, then a weeks-long countdown with repeated reminders runs before anything is purged — and reads stay open the entire time so you can export. See Leaving.

Will you offer unlimited storage?

No. We sell a clear allowance you can use up to, never "unlimited" — because a clear ceiling is what lets us keep the price predictable and the promises honest.
